I have made a decision. I'm gonna go back to Sung Siew on Monday and ask my ex-teachers to give me recommendations....hopefully it'll turn out well! I really have to start earning and spending my own cash. Money, the ultimate source of motivation to get me on the move man!
Btw, I do have an interesting experience to share in this seemingly lifeless and boring routine of mine. My mum's assistant asked me to help tutor her son & nieces, FOC of course. Being the ever-so-helpful person/son that I am, I accepted the voluntary work. Here's a brief account of my first lesson with the 3 little children (hereinafter referred to as "kids") aged 8, 9, and 10.
Kids: ng sik, yud dit dou ng sik gong (canto) ( meaning they can't converse in english...at all ).
Timo: During English lessons, does ur teacher teach in English?
Kids: Mostly Mandarin......
Timo: How bout for math classes?
Kids: Also the same
Timo: Die
They can recognize words and write....a bit larrrr, but the reading/speaking part is terrible . The poor kids are good in math but the problem lies in understanding the question (which, btw is now in English ). I now see the rationale behind the protest amongst Chinese Schools regarding the change from chinese to english as the medium for language. There is no way they can perform well in math and science if they can't comprehend the exam questions. No offense, but most students from chinese primary schools in Sabah aren't exposed to English ( be it in school or back home ). You can call them overly-cheena or whatever but I think that a strong foundation in mandarin is a good thing. They can always pick up 'math and science in English' when they're in Sec School what! Haha, anyways just a personal opinion.
Since I have agreed to tutor them, I'm gonna put in effort man! My goal: Have them converse in English (at least to me) by September. Not too difficult a task to complete, eh? The problem lies in their confidence and level of exposure. I'll have them reading Enid Blyton and have their parents subscribing to cartoon network in no time! HA! Wish me luck!
Cheers,
TIMOthy
